About Us
ABOUT THIS STORE - Most all of us have a heart to help our “Neighbors in Need” but don’t have a clear path to do so. Helping Hands is teaming with local business owners making assistance readily available in our community. Your purchase from ShopHelpingHands.us not only supports local business but also helps provide assistance to local families in crisis.
Local business owners are providing discounts and gift certificates to Helping Hands so they can be sold to raise funds that support the community service Helping Hands provides. Please join the effort to serve our “Neighbors in Need” by shopping here at ShopHelpingHands.us.
OUR CHARGE - For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’ Deuteronomy 15:11
THE NEED - Census Bureau reports show more than 80,000 seniors live in our service area. AARP reports the average senior living in Riverside County needs an additional $10,793 in order to make ends meet.
With the current federal guidelines in place, these seniors are not considered “poor” and do not qualify for most social support programs. Tragically they do not have enough income to cover their basic expenses. Many seniors so often end up choosing between food and other basic needs.
This is such a common occurrence it has been termed “Food Insecurity”. Food Insecurity means choosing to pay rent or to buy food. Pay a utility bill or go to the doctor. Pay rent or go to the dentist. Reports show between 2011 and 2017 food insecurity among seniors rose by 50%. Feeding America reports more than 28,000 seniors go without food in Southwest Riverside County.
Food insecurity also means even when money is available to purchase food, seniors may not have the resources to access or prepare the food. These barriers are due to lack of transportation, functional limitations, or health problems.
